My Story

SusannaI first tried yoga in 1995 when pregnant with my second child. The physical freedom and sense of calm I felt at the end of each session ignited my interest.

After the birth I attended several different classes; I saw yoga as a way of getting my body into shape but soon found them boring and repetitive. On the advice of a friend I tried Iyengar Yoga and was hooked from the first class. I really loved the feeling of ‘aliveness’ and well-being I started to experience.

I qualified as an Iyengar Yoga teacher in 2001. In 2007 I became an independent yoga teacher so that I could incorporate a broader range of practices within my classes.

I believe yoga to be so much more than exercise. It looks like exercise – we move the body into, and hold a variety of postures. But by bringing the attention to the physical body we move the information held in the subconscious into the conscious mind. We start to understand where we hold tension and how to release it. We start to see how our bodies are the physical manifestations of who we are, and by using our bodies we have a route to transformation. We start to experience the subtle body. Yoga can be considered a holistic therapy- one that we practice on our selves!

I teach in a way that allows each student to choose the best level of posture to suit their body in this moment. This yoga is not about making your body fit a pose but about understanding what your body is capable of. I offer you the opportunity to take your body through its full range of movement and to seek to yield to new experience in each moment. This yoga is about how it feels on the inside not about how it looks on the outside.

Yoga is physically demanding; the mind has to concentrate on the posture and so mind and body are brought to the same place at the same time. The effect is profound because so much of our day is spent with the mind dwelling in the past or projecting the future while only our bodies remain in the present.

There are as many types of yoga as there are teachers – each one bringing their experiences to the classes they teach. I warmly invite you to come and try my classes. You are welcome to drop in for two trial classes at the current rate before committing to the half term.

Classes are at The Kelling Studio, a beautiful purpose built space. The harmony of design and the under floor heating make it a blissful place to practice. It has abundant parking and is just three minutes outside Holt. It has its own changing rooms and disabled facilities.
